Bart and Han, assisted by Max Frick, took care
of the sound for the new Peter Greenaway film 'the
tulse luper suitcase' in April and May. "Taking care of
the sound" is rather vague, so to clarify matters, we distinguish between the following activities:
- producing tones and sounds, which give character to the film, or influence it's atmosphere (also called sound design) - making sure the sound recorded at the set, sounds as good as possible (restoring and mixing)
- making an M&E. This means 'Music and Effects' and signifies the making of a soundtrack that can be used abroad, in countries where films are being dubbed. In these countries the dialogues can be replaced, while all the other sounds, such as footsteps, movement sounds, the sounds of things picked up or put down, etc. are still heard. For this purpose all these sounds need to be reproduced (foley) or cut out of the original sound recorded at the set.
