Addo,the African King

fragment

Writing music for wildlife films is a rewarding job: magnificent, spacious landscapes, real drama and chases for life and death, no shamefull dialogues or lousy acting, what more could you want? 'Addo' is a dramatised wildlife film from Nature Conservation Films, produced by Universal. In this case dramatized means the plot is formed with documentary material. The main character is Addo, an old lion looking back on his life.

There was little time to compose the score for 'Addo'. We were lucky to book an orchestra in Prague in time. However we only could have one session, and there was no time to compose and orchestrate more material in the few weeks we had. At the end of August we took the nighttrain to Prague., with Alan Miller the director and Jochem van Rijs the producer, expecting to arrive the following day. But the next morning, close to Dresden, Jochem knocked on our cariadge door, with the ominous words: "we have a problem".

The problem: Water. Prague, blocked off by a flood, was no longer an option.... We had to come up with an other plan within a week. Moscow seemed to be an attainable option. Everybody knows stories of Moscow, I had been there before and a good friend, Manfred Witteman, used to live and work there. We decided only to go there if Manfred could guide us.

One week later we flew to Moscow with Manfred, Jochem and Evert, the producer of the film. All went well, we stayed in the enormous Russia Hotel. It was a quarter of an hour's walk each evening to our rooms. The orchestra started off a bit rusty, but we managed to break this Slavic apathy with a fierce chase, which was very difficult to play. After this they seemed inspired and kept doing the best they could.

After our return we still had 4 days left before the music needed to be finished. Danny, however, came up with the clever idea of recording the music, multi-channeled, directly into our laptops. This way we could make a start editing at the hotelroom (photo of Danny from the making of). This is a rare example of technology effectively gaining time, instead of providing extra options and therefore costing time. At the same time Bart was mixing the already finished music in the other studio. So Danny and I only had to do the cutting. We made it in time. Looking back now, like Addo himself in fact, it was an enchanting project.
